Hello BSB,

A trench coat without the belt definitely ruins the whole concept. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you haven't found the right trench coat. Depending on the belt it can accentuate or camouflage.

Someone with a contoured long waist would be able to mix this jacket up a bit by even wearing a wide black belt with it while someone who was short waisted probably couldn't.

A trench and belt like the one above (it blends in) gives the impression of a waist even on someone with an apple shaped middle. Because the belt blends in though it doesn't draw attention to it. I'd also look for a softer fabric (the one above 100% cotton which is good). Harder fabrics just looked puckered around the middle which also catches the eye. Also if the jacket doesn't fit properly under the arm it in the front or back, it will look even worse when a tie is wrapped around it.

Don't give up on the belt! :)

I love trench coats too, but I do have a problem with the belts on them because I carry all my weight in the stomach. Belts don’t look good around my apple-shaped middle but wearing a trench without a belt just looks like a sack. Any suggestions?
