Stylish Plus Size Dresses and Separates

3 Questions to Ask Before Buying Bridal Lingerie

Most brides only think about their wedding day being the biggest day of their life. They forget that the wedding night is one of the most romantic. That is why it is key to have amazing bridal lingerie that makes you feel sexy, confident and ready for a life of romance and love.

Hips and Curves Ainsley Raw Silk Steel Bone Corset, $149. 95.

It is important to know how to pick the perfect piece. Think about these three things first, then buy your bridal lingerie to help ensure it is perfect for your wedding and wedding night.

Will It Work Under Your Wedding Dress?

If you are planning to wear it under your wedding gown, you will need to take a number of things into account.

Strapless gowns require support without the benefit of straps while flowing styles may call for something that will not show through silky fabrics. A beautiful corset can both enhance your shape with a silhouette you love under your wedding gown. They also provide a strapless lift.

You may also want to think about using a half-slip. Half-slips help create a smooth and seamless look under fitted gowns. If you are doing a casual gown for your wedding, you have it easy. Try something simple like a pretty lace bra and panty set.

Do You Plan to Sleep In It?

At the end of the day, you are likely to want bridal lingerie that is comfortable to wear, but still special and beautiful. Now you can show off to your new partner while also having something comfy to sleep in. If the two of you are going directly to your honeymoon, size will also play a factor.

Use soft fabrics and designs without underwires so they fit more comfortably. You also want items that can easily pack into smaller spaces without getting damaged.

A long satin gown will bathe you in smooth, satiny comfort throughout your day of greeting guests and dancing the night away. You will also look gorgeous when you unveil it on your wedding night.

Hips and Curves Lace Trim Satin Gown, $42.95.

Babydoll-style lingerie in breathable cotton and set off with romantic lace makes a lovely option for a summer wedding. Finish off your look with a sexy silk robe and you are good to go.

Does the Bridal Lingerie Suit Your Style?

This is the most important. If your bridal lingerie does not represent you and how unique you are, it will help to give you that additional boost of confidence.

Ask yourself, are you a modern bride or a traditionalist? Do you want something fun and flirty or simple and romantic? Choosing bridal lingerie that suits your style not only lets you make a personal statement on your wedding night, it also ensures you feel great wearing it.

If you love the look of traditional romance, consider an Edwardian chemise. For something fun and different, you can add a special wedding night veil. If you want to get a bit racy, try crotchless panties with pearls or some fun accessories like nippies.

The key to buying bridal lingerie that you (and your partner) will love is choosing pieces that suit your figure, your dress, your taste, and your wedding style. Think about what lingerie pieces make you feel incredible and then use them to ensure you have an amazing night of romance as a newly-wed.

Plus Size Shortlettes Underwear

Another alternative to thigh rub is Under Summers. They offer pretty bicycle style short underwear in pretty fabrics with or without lace accents — they call them shortlettes (they are not shapewear!) They are pretty reasonably priced too, under $35. There are lots of options from solids colors to animal prints. And there are matching camisoles. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Two options for battling thigh from from Under Summers shortlettes.

The base layer shown in coral here comes in three other colors (turquoise, black, and silverfish). As does the print (zebra, brown leopard, and grey leopard). There is an excellent size range from XL to 6X. In the U.S. they offer free shipping for orders over $50, not sure if they ship to Canada yet or what the rate is (sent them an email and will update when I find out).

The Sexy Chemise

Sexy does not have to be over the top. It can be elegantly simple. While Hips & Curves has items with the main focus of exposing your derriere they also have items for those of us who are more reserved. Case in point, the sexy chemise which come in a multitude of styles and colors for many personalities and tastes. Here are five of my favorite (and they are all under $40):

  • Lace Cup Printed Babydoll, $33
  • Mon Cheri Mesh Chemise, $37
  • Sinfully Sweet Georgette Babydoll, $30
  • Floral Mesh Babydoll, $35
  • Lacy Trim Chemise and Thong (I actually have this one and it’s one of my favorites — not the thong), $30

These sexy chemises are flirty, fun, and are adorable enough to wear even if you are alone.

Highback Underbust Corset

Sure it is from a lingerie site, sure it looks good with lace, and garters, and school girl costumes but it also looks great over a t-shirt or blouse with jeans or dress pants. This black highback underbust corset is 100% polyester and sold in sizes 1x to 6x for $59.95 at Hips & Curves. There is no real boning in it which is typical of the price and it also makes it easier for the average person to wear it more like a top all day than a piece of lingerie worn for shorter duration.

This black corset from Hips and Curves goes all the way up the back in a racerback style with strings up the middle and curves under the breasts in the front. Perfect for layering over tops.

Since X sizing is duo sizing I would go with a size up if you are on the higher end of the duo size. Although the upside with this piece is that there are strings in the back to make it a little forgiving. Read their sizing information before ordering and beware that it is different for everything they carry. It you want specific advice about sizing email them first.

Chemise and Robe

Kathie Lee & Hoda had a feature on winter lingerie on the Today Show this week which included two pieces from my favorite plus size lingerie shop Hips & Curves. While they were paired together on the show they are not a set. These would definitely make a great gift for Christmas, birthday, or Valentine’s (it’s never too early to think about it). Here is a short video clip from the Today Show:

The pieces featured include the Soft & Comfy Lace Trim Chemise which is only $36.95. It is available in six colors: charcoal, plum, red, white, magenta, and turquoise.

There are no fabric details but it looks cotton jerseyish. Hopefully it will be thicker than the Cotton Lace Trim Chemise with Side Slits I picked up a few months ago. It is really cute though with its little skirt ruffles.

The Soft & Comfy Robe only comes in black and is $49.95, again no material details but looks cotton jerseyish. Both the Chemise and the Robe are available in sizes 1x to 6x.

Is something like this warm enough for you in the winter or do you need something a little more substantial for winter sleeping?

Elomi Longline Bra

Longline bras are not for every plus size body. If your lumps and bumps are not in the right place they can easily roll up on you if move the wrong way — leaving for constant readjustment and discomfort. If you carry most of your weight in your lower waist then you are more likely to love these bras. I especially like this Elomi one on Ashley Graham from Full Beauty. It has a great size range too.

There is a vintage appeal I think to longline bras. How about you, do you like them or not?

Comfy but Sexy Sleepwear

Hips and Curves is not all about sexy chemises and corsets. They have some casual and comfy pieces that have some sexy features too. One of my favorites is their cotton tank dress. It comes in sizes 1x to 5x for $33 and four colors options: black, grey, plum, and red. My favorite is the power purple.

This plus size purple tank dress is from Hips and Curves sleepwear section.

It is a simple looking tank top dress from the front but turn it around and there is a splash of pretty lace on the back! I like the racer back style too.

Low-Key but Sexy

I find that Lane Bryant’s lingerie selections offer a lower key style than the online lingerie shops. Don’t get me wrong, I still think they are sexy offerings but they are just a different kind of sexy. Many of their options could be worn any night of the week and not just on “special occasions”. Here are a few of my favorite low-key plus size lingerie items:

Red Hot Curves

When it comes to plus size lingerie, Hips and Curves seems to focus on the finer details, the lines, the peek-a-book, the lace, the bows. And they do a good job of it. Around Valentine’s day they really know how to highlight the red hot curves of a plus size woman. Here are a few of my favorite red pieces of lingerie to help you explore your inner (and outer) hotness:
