Stylish Plus Size Dresses and Separates

The Chenille Sweater

It is soft. It is luxurious. And it is surprisingly affordable. Ulla Popken seems to be bringing back chenille. I find chenille can either be hit or miss. I have had ones that I loved literally to bits and some that just gathered dust in my closet. As I was typing this I remembered a sapphire blue v-neck chenille sweater that I have packed away somewhere — obviously a favorite — I will have to dig it back out. But back to Ulla Popken, here are a few of my favorite chenille sweater picks from their plus size sweater collection (which I hope will get a bit bigger as the season goes on). Chenille is not just for girly scarves and gloves it works great made into a pullover or as a cardigan.

Plus Size Chenille Sweaters from Ulla Popken

All three sweaters are machine washable and come in three to four color choices. Clockwise:

  • V-neck Chenille Sweater, $59
  • Shawl Collar Chenille Jacket, $74
  • Waterfall Neck Chenille Sweater, $59

Casual chenille sweaters are one of those everyday comforts of home pieces that make you feel babied. Do you have any chenille sweaters buried in your closet?.

Warming Up with Making It Big

Making It Big (MIB) is ready to keep us warm with some lovely plus size fall and winter tunics, blouses, and tees. If you are still not familiar with Making It Big, they are a U.S. company (1984) that offers clothing for sizes 1X to 8X. And, yes they do ship internationally.

Here are six of my favorite plus size tops from their latest collection:

Top Row:

  • The Maci Tunic ($95) comes in three colors but I like “gulfs” best. It is 100% cotton and machine washable.
  • The Sao Paulo Tunic ($95) is 100% knit rayon and machine washable. My love for asymmetrical hemlines has not died off yet.
  • The Aspen Pullover ($99) looks perfect for snuggling up by the fire or cool fall walks. It is 100% polyester and machine washable. It comes in three of my favorite colors (blue, grey, and chocolate).

Bottom Row:

  • The Karenna Blouse ($89) comes in three prints but I like the “red” best. It is $100% rayon and machine washable.
  • The Sullivan Tunic ($89) comes in four colors and surprisingly the “dynasty” green is my favorite (closely followed by port). This 100% cotton shirt is machine washable.
  • The Foliage Blouse ($89) has some interesting interesting details on the bodice with the different pleats on front and back. It is 100% rayon and machine washable.

Belted or Not?

It seems like a huge trend with sweaters this season is belting them even on plus size fashionistas (Why should we be deprived of belt love afterall). Plus Size Belted Cardigan from Penningtons

Whether they are thick belts or thin belts and whether they are lightweight sweaters or chunky cardigans — it seems to be hot. So hot, in fact, that many (but not all) sweaters are coming with their own belts.

How to you feel about the whole belted sweater craze?

Striped Sweaters

If striped sweaters are the theme of the day for you then you should check out Eloquii’s collection. I have not seen so many striped sweaters in one spot. Here are a few of my favorites plus a few color blocked ones which are essentially wide stripes and well, I like them.

A few of these look like they might be a light enough knit to layer when it gets colder. All of these sweaters are currently under $40 or lower. Keep warm!

A new online shop for curvy women called Eddy and Bri prides themselves in having nothing over $100. I found some great pieces in their new arrivals that are quite promising and all were under $32. They offer free shipping in the U.S. on orders $75 or more (international flat rate of $19). Here are some of my favorite picks:

Hot Pink

I first noticed the Longline Shirt Tunic from City Chic Online back in July. I still think it is hot and since the sheer trend is continuing into fall I see no reason why it would not transition over a long sleeve top/dress. I am actually really shocked they are only sold out of size 22 (Sizes 14 to 24) — is it the “duster” length that is scaring people? Or the sheerness? I am also shocked it is not on sale yet and is still selling for $69.

Black seems like the most logical choice but what would you wear with it?

Brittany Gibbons for Lands’ End

Yesterday, as a representative for All Thing Chic, I had the opportunity to meet Brittany Gibbons online during a Lands End Facebook chat featuring their new plus size line. Brittany is a blogger at the Curvy Girl Guide and is the brand spokes model for Lands’ End. Here is a great video they created to showcase three great looks using some trendy and everyday pieces:

While surfing through the plus size section of Lands’ End I was impressed by their over 400 items just for plus size women. Here are just seven of my favorites:

Fall Hues

Jessica London is getting ready for fall with fresh maxi dresses, jeggings, leather sheaths, suede jackets and more. I love many of the colors I am seeing in their collection but especially the blues, spice, and honey mustard.

Blue

My favorite color has been and will always be the many different shades of blue whether it is deep navy, marine, or teal.

Spice

Nothing says fall like the warm colors of spice reminiscent of the colors on a bright fall day.

Honey Mustard

The transition from bright yellow to a deeper one is like a last ditch effort to hold on to the longer days of summer.

Fall and Winter Outerwear

Another season of cool weather will be upon us before we know it. I am pretty disappointed that plus size women will not have As You Are to get outerwear from this winter but I am a bit excited about the cute outerwear recently unveiled by Yoek in their Autumn/Winter lookbook. I do not have any prices or anything yet but keep your eyes peeled for these pieces (I especially love the first one):

Print Denim Jackets

If you are not comfortable with mixing your own prints sometimes a retailer will come out with their version of mixed prints all in one piece. Like this printed cropped jacket from Lane Bryant. From a distance the print looks like a trendy python print:

But it is a combination of the snake print, paisley, and hearts — and it works! I love it:

It would look great over a bright solid maxi (and with so many colors it would have many matching options) and flats or with black (or red, or blue) denim and heels. This cute print jacket is available in sizes 14 to 28 for $80 (reg).

Union Jack Tops

Having the Olympics in London has made the Union Jack a little trendier than usual, even now that the games are overs. I have always liked it on tees and messengers bags.

Of course you can get a simple version at Yours Clothing:

But Lane Bryant also has a cute one I like (and a few others):

I do not know why but the Union Jack always looks awesome with a denim jacket.

More Cold Shoulder Tops

A few weeks ago I mentioned the influx of cold-shoulder tops; especially the dressy ones from Kiyonna. Well the influx has not stopped. There seems to be cold shoulder tops around every corner but with the heat I am definitely not complaining.

Lane Bryant has some real winners in their plus size casual top collection that I really like:

Clockwise:

  • Cold Shoulder Medallion Tee, $40
  • Lace Inset Cold Shoulder Top, $40
  • Striped Poncho by Seven7, $70

Do It Yourself

And if you are somewhat crafty with scissors and a sewing machine I imagine this would be an incredibly easy DIY project. Here is a quick DIY video with no sewing from Dani over at Resonate Local:

While she cuts over the arm and shoulder seam I would probably only cut the arm section because plus size tops tend to fit us differently. But if you have a lot of old tees, experiment!

The King

I laugh every time I see this t-shirt from Threadless (The King by Alex Solis). You need to have some working knowledge of the Disney movie The Lion King and Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll”, to truly appreciate the humor and cuteness of this design.

Orange is an incredibly bright color and not everyone can wear it but I do understand why it was chosen — at least in my mind — it is the perfect sunset color; but I think yellow would have been nice too.

Threadless t-shirts are the perfect no-fuss-dressing for jeans (or cut offs) summer day kind of dressing. And they always make great conversation pieces. I once had a doctor comment on a Threadless shirt I was wearing to an appointment. You never know who wears Threadless.
